JHM CELEBRATES 90 YEARS!

Picture
The Johnson Brothers, David & John, grew up in Coshocton in the 1840s. Even from an early age they were collectors. Their father even built a small, stone cottage to house their collections. As adults, they were successful businessmen who traveled around the world.

JHM originated in 1924 from a bequest of 15,000 items by the Johnson Brothers to the city of Coshocton. They wanted the city to establish a museum as a memorial to their Johnson and Humrickhouse ancestors. These bachelor brothers collected American Indian, European, and Asian objects while traveling worldwide and residing in Washington State.

On January 6, 1931, a train left Tacoma for Coshocton laden with their bequest filling 109 boxes, 20 crates, 30 barrels, and 2 bales. The collection was given over to the Coshocton County Library Board of Trustees to oversee the collections and a museum. The Johnson-Humrickhouse Memorial Museum had their grand opening on May 8th, 1931 in the old Sycamore Schoolhouse.
In 1979 the museum relocated to a new building in Roscoe Village. The collection began to outgrow the old school building, and the museum fit in so beautifully with the rich history of Roscoe. The new Roscoe Village location was favorable for tourists and locals alike!

Thank you Coshocton County for making our last 90 years great! Here is to 90 more!
