Pushing the Surface
May - September 1st

Picture
The Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum proudly presents "Pushing the Surface," a stunning exhibition of contemporary art quilts that explores the boundaries of tradition and innovation. Now in its fourteenth biennial installment, this celebrated show features work from nationally and internationally recognized artists.

While rooted in the fundamental structure of quilting—layered fabrics held together by stitching—these pieces break free from convention through bold techniques and imaginative design. Some surfaces are pieced and patched in traditional fashion, while others are painted, dyed, laser-printed, appliquéd, or fused. The result is a dynamic blend of artistry and craftsmanship that transforms fiber into a powerful medium for storytelling and expression.

Curated by Elisa Deadman, Roxanna Deadman, and Linda Fowler, Pushing the Surface is a vibrant tapestry of color, texture, and narrative that speaks to both mind and spirit. This exhibition is made possible through the generous support of the Mary F. Taylor Family Fund and the Ohio Arts Council, whose funding helps foster creativity, education, and cultural enrichment across the state.

Don't miss this extraordinary showcase of contemporary textile art—on view now at the Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum until September 1st.

Support for this exhibit has been provided The Ohio Arts Council with state tax dollars to encourage economic growth, educational excellence and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans.
