The Dorsey Sisters of Coshocton, Ohio
August 14th @ 6:00 PM

The Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum presented this discussion on the Dorsey sisters of Coshocton, Ohio on August 14th, 2025.

Jessie Dorsey Green (1874-1971) and Gertrude Dorsey Brown (1876-1963) were born and raised in Coshocton. They both graduated from Coshocton High School, the only African American members of their respective classes, and went out into the world and did some amazing things. Jessie, a nurse and educator, helped found a school that later became Voorhees University. Gertrude was a gifted writer whose work has been included in prestigious anthologies. Join us as we take a look at the life and times of these amazing women and how they were shaped by their local upbringing and the historical events taking place in the wider world. They leave behind an inspiring legacy of which all Coshoctonians can be proud.

A Journey Through Coshocton's Black History
June 25th @ 6:00 PM
@ JH Musem

In honor of Juneteenth (also known as "Freedom Day"), we explored and celebrated the lives of five Black residents of Coshocton who thrived in spite of difficult circumstances and left their mark on the place we call home. We began with Letty Thomas, a formerly enslaved woman who became Coshocton's first Black business owner, and we concluded with Lula Williams, a beloved community member who witnessed extraordinary changes over the course of the century she lived in Coshocton.

This program was led by Lucy Bryan Malenke, co-founder of Coshoctonians for Peace and Equality, JHH Museum Archivist Abigail Callis, and JHH Program Coordinator Holli Rainwater on June 25th, 2025.

Transforming Tales: Exploring Culture and
the Animal Within with Rachel Yoder

December 18th @ 6:30 PM
@ JH Musem or Via Zoom

This program was recorded at The Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum on December 18th, 2024. Staff members Holli Rainwater and Jennifer Bush hosted it, with special guest Rachel Yoder, author of Nightbitch.

Yoder, who grew up in Coshocton County and worked at JHM as a teenager, joined us via Zoom to explore her novel's themes. We highlighted Native American and Asian artifacts from our collection and used them to delve into origin and transformation stories of various cultures. How do these stories, like that of a woman transforming into a dog in "Nightbitch," influence our view of humanity? Find out if animal stories, ancient and modern, can help us be better humans. 🧍‍♀️🐕
